Learn about high blood pressure

Facts about high blood pressure

  • Nearly one billion people around the world – that is one in four adults – have high blood pressure
  • High blood pressure leads to roughly 7.1 million deaths per year and can cause serious damage to people’s hearts, brains, and kidneys, ultimately leading to heart attack, stroke and heart failure
  • Anyone can suffer from high blood pressure, however some people are at more risk than others. For example, people who have diabetes, people over 60, people who are overweight and people who smoke are all at an increased risk

The good news

  • High blood pressure can be easily measured and successfully treated – but only if people take action
  • Lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise are essential for people with high blood pressure, but many people also require medication to help keep their blood pressure under control
